AI Network Engineering Intern

At a glance

The Network Department is exploring whether AI can take over 15% of the work of a junior network engineer by 2027. This initiative aims to contribute to automation, efficiency, and improved network designs. We apply a “buy before build” principle, meaning existing AI tools are evaluated before developing custom solutions.

Objective:
To investigate how AI can support the Network Department through automation and by performing tasks typically handled by a junior network engineer. The research will result in a business case describing feasibility, benefits, risks, and organizational impact.

Your job

Main Goal:
Research how AI can contribute to the Network Department through automation and task execution comparable to a junior network engineer. The outcome of this research is a well-founded business case covering feasibility, benefits, risks, and organizational impact.

Research Areas:

  • AI capabilities and existing tools
Identify existing AI solutions for network management and automation
Analyze their functionalities and potential use cases.
  • Tasks and processes
Conduct interviews with engineers and management to identify tasks that AI could take over
Assess the impact of AI on workflows and task allocation.
  • Risks and limitations
Identify risks such as model bias, compliance, and security challenges
Investigate mitigating measures to manage these risks.
  • Compliance and regulation
Identify relevant laws and regulations related to AI usage in network management
Analyze how the organization can comply with these requirement.
  • Business case development
Develop a business case including cost-benefit analysis, feasibility, and an implementation proposal
Provide recommendations on AI adoption and potential next steps.

Expected Deliverables:

  • Overview of AI tools and their suitability for the Network Department.
  • Analysis of which tasks AI can take over and the impact on workflows.
  • Risk analysis with mitigation proposals.
  • Overview of compliance requirements and recommendations.
  • A substantiated business case with an implementation proposal.
